Chances are you have probably heard of botox treatment, the miraculous “cure” for fine lines and wrinkles that everyone is talking about. But how does it work, how long does it last, and what exactly can it be used for?

What is Botox?

Similar to dermal fillers, Botox is the name for a substance that is injected into skin. It is known to have an inhibiting effect on muscle movement, and so can help to stop fine lines and wrinkles from forming or from getting worse than they are.  The term Botox actually comes from the word ‘Botulous’ which means sausage! I know that doesn’t sound that glamorous but it is because the substance we use today is related to a naturally occurring poison which can sometimes be found in meat products that have gone off. Stick with us, it’s worth it we promise!

What is Botox used for?

Botox is probably best well-known for its youthful properties, preventing fine lines from worsening and helping to give the face a youthful appearance. However, it also has some less well known uses as well – did you know, for example, that it can be injected into the armpits to help stop excessive sweating?

How does Botox work?

When Botox is used in the face for cosmetic reasons, it blocks the nerve signals to certain muscles which relaxes them, and this in turn helps to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the skin.

What does the treatment involve?

Again, it is a series of injections to the face, and so it usually takes around 35 to 45 minutes. You may experience some slight bruising or swelling after treatment, but this should go down within 24 hours and in the meantime can be disguised with make-up.

Who should have this treatment?

This treatment is ideal for a wide variety of patients, especially those with fine lines and wrinkles. It can be really useful in improving the look of crow’s feet and frown lines for a period of time, but it will need to be topped up regularly to ensure a consistent result.

How long does Botox last?

Botox has a freezing effect on muscles that tends to last between 4 to 6 months. After the treatment you should be able to see results within an hour, with the main result being visible after about a week.

A Beginners Guide to Facial Aesthetics

by on July 17, 2017 | Posted in blog

From Botox treatment to dermal fillers and brow lifts, facial aesthetics come in a wide variety.

Whether you’re interested in looking your best for an upcoming job interview or a potential romantic relationship, facial aesthetics can be the answer.

If you’re new to the world of facial aesthetics you likely have tons of questions too.

Down below we’ve outlined the basics of these treatments and the benefits you can expect from them.

Top Treatments

While each year brings with it new facial aesthetic treatments, some remain ever popular. These include the following.

Botox Treatment

Botox has been around since 1987 and is used to treat a wide variety of aging and facial deformities. Doctors use it to relax facial and neck muscles to get rid of signs of aging. It is also used to tighten and lift facial muscles for a more youthful look.

According to the Daily Mail, over 1 million botox injections occur each year. Proven to be safe and effective for a wide variety of treatments, botox treatment is not only safe but also incredibly popular.

Depending on your unique circumstances, health, and desired effect Botox treatment may be the right treatment for you. Speak with one of our facial aesthetics experts to learn more.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are used to reduce fine lines on the face and to bring back volume and fullness. Thanks to the natural aging process, our faces lose subcutaneous fat. This causes our facial muscles to lie closer to the skin’s surface, causing crow’s feet and smile lines to appear.

On top of this, our skin stretches, causing an even greater loss of facial volume. Our lifestyle, sun exposure, and genes also contribute to a loss of facial skin tightness.

The facial skin also stretches a bit, adding to this loss of facial volume. Other factors that affect the facial skin include sun exposure, heredity, and lifestyle.

Put simply, dermal fillers breathe life back to our skin. Dermal fillers can be used to plump your lips, reduce the appearance of scars, soften facial creases and wrinkles, and decrease or remove the shadow over the lower lids. It’s also a great tool to use to fight off the first signs of aging and is a great addition to any rejuvenation surgery.

Brow Lift

Countless people get a brow lift each year. Also called a forehead lift, brow lifts are designed to reduce wrinkles that exist horizontally across the forehead. Some wrinkles that exist between the eyes and the bridge of the nose can also be reduced with a brow lift.

Whether you want to improve frown lines, creases in between your eyebrows, or provide a more alert youthful look across your forehead and eyes, brow lifts are a good solution.

Often times, brow lifts complement cosmetic procedures like facelifts, lower eyelid surgery, or skin resurfacing.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing uses two lasers such as the carbon dioxide and erbium, to erase issues on the surface of your skin.

This treatment can reverse wrinkles, scars, acne scars, warts, and enlarged oil glands. It does take up to two weeks to recover from the treatment, but the results typically last around 6 months.

Chemical peels

Another popular facial treatment is chemical peels. It is one of the least invasive ways to repair your skin.

It works by dabbing a chemical solution to the surface of your skin causing it to shed. This then triggers the skin’s natural regeneration process and new skin cells are formed. It typically treats conditions like rosacea, acne, melasma and more.

This treatment isn’t always best for sensitive skin, but it can provide fairly quick results such as smoother, clearer skin.

What Conditions Can Be Treated?

Facial aesthetic treatments are designed for a variety of conditions. Some of the most commonly treated are:

  • – Acne
  • – Wrinkles
  • – Veins
  • – Brown Spots
  • – Sun damage
  • – Dehydrated skin
  • – Excess hair
  • – Dull surface layer
  • – And much more

Whether you decide to get a botox treatment or dermal fillers, or a brow lift, there are countless options that will fit your unique situation.

The first step towards getting high-quality results in it to ensure that you know what your options are. The best way to do that is to see a professional in person. Each treatment is different and may require a specialist.

The vast majority of people who opt for facial aesthetic treatment choose dermal fillers or botox treatment, but there is another lesser known procedure known as a brow lift. So what exactly is it and how can it enhance an appearance? Let’s take a closer look….

As the ageing process takes hold some people may experience mild to moderate sagging in the brow area. This can make them appear older than their years. One suggestion may be a surgical cosmetic procedure that lifts the brow back into position. As you can imagine this is pretty invasive stuff and costly to boot. So what if you don’t want to go under the knife? What are your options? You might want to consider a non-surgical eyebrow lift using botox treatment.

What's A Brow Lift And How Does It Enhance An Appearance 2So how does it enhance the appearance?

Carefully controlled amounts of Botox are skilfully injected into the area that contains the muscles that depress the brow. This causes the muscles to rest and relax when the brow is in a lifted position.  As well as lifting the brow horizontally, skilled practitioners can also lift the tail end of the brow by injecting into the crow’s feet area to the side of the eye, creating an attractive raised arch. The type of treatment carried out depends upon the facial aesthetic requirements of the patient, but primarily the idea is to enhance the framework around the eyes. In addition dermal fillers can also be used in conjunction with a non-surgical brow lift to fill out those deep ingrained wrinkles that occur as we age. Together they can be used to create an impressive youthful look.

Who is a brow lift for?

Botox treatment for brow lifting is used on men and women of all ages and skin types. It can help those people who experience mild brow hooding as well as those with naturally droopy or low-hanging eyelids, in order to achieve that perfect youthful look. The advantages of a non-surgical brow lift are obvious. It’s non-evasive (unlike a surgical full brow lift), it costs a fraction of what the equivalent surgical procedure would cost, and there’s zero recovery/down time, so patients can go about their daily business right away. Provided that patients choose their cosmetic specialist with care, it really is a win/win situation. Not only does the patient get the look they want, they appear more confident because of it.
